Professional Master's Program

The Professional Master’s Program in Cultural Heritage and Social Projects was created in 2003 by an experienced team of professionals from the Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History of Brazil of Fundação Getulio Vargas (currently, School of Social Sciences — FGV CPDOC). The Professional Master's Program in Cultural Heritage and Social Projects is, therefore, part of an institution with extensive experience in the management and production of public goods. It holds of one of the most important documentary archives of the history of Republican Brazil. It includes about 200 personal archives of public figures and over 7,000 hours of oral history interviews. A pioneer in the gathering of heritage, and in the academic reflection on them, CPDOC is a reference for those working in similar institutions or for those wishing to initiate projects related to the field of memory and documentation.

With 247 papers presented by December 2020 and score 5 in the last two evaluative processes of CAPES, the Professional Master's Program in Cultural Heritage and Social Projects of CPDOC combines the academic and professional expertise of its faculty with the diversity and potential of its students.

The Professional Master's Program in Cultural Heritage and Social Projects does not offer scholarships. Payment can be made at a lump sum or in monthly installments.

The Professional Doctoral Program started in 2021 and is the result of the Professional Master's Program in Cultural Heritage and Social Projects created by CPDOC in 2003 and highly rated by Capes. Continued education on culture and social projects with applied research skills is an urgent demand from Brazilian society. Graduates may have a key role in companies, governments and civil society due to their management skills and scientific intelligence to design, evaluate and creatively transform public policies. Besides, it is impossible to think about the country's development without a range of Cultural Heritage and Social Project products that support the making of intelligent long-lasting public policies. Likewise, the promotion of an applied scientific culture based on evidence and critical reasoning is key to the improvement of public debate in the areas of Cultural Heritage and Social Projects, where opinions without empirical support still abound.

Objectives

The professional master’s program in Cultural Heritage and Social Projects is designed to provide qualification or continued education to higher level professionals working or intending to work, either from an applied perspective or from an academic perspective, with historical and social research, production, preservation, and diffusion of cultural heritage, designing or implementing public cultural policies and projects.

The professional master’s program trains those working in the program’s field of study in the use of theoretical and methodological instruments that allow them to meet new challenges, implement innovative projects, and improve their professional practices.

The program is also an option for young undergraduates wishing to obtain a solid academic background that prepares them to work with heritage, centers for memory, and projects of social impact not only in the field of culture, but also in administration, tourism, education, communication, and sports, whether in private companies, government agencies, or in the nonprofit sector.

Finally, the program has been designed to bring high-level professionals up-to-date with the latest methodological and epistemological debates that characterize the fields of history and the social sciences. By providing this level of education, our goal is to offer students in the professional master’s program the option of also pursuing an academic career.

Target Audience

The professional master’s program in Cultural Heritage and Social Projects is for all those holding a higher education degree — regardless of their background — who wish to improve their qualifications to work in an expanding area. Graduates may choose to be self-employed or to join private sector institutions, including corporations, planning and consulting firms; or they may choose to work in the public sector, including ministries, secretariats, heritage agencies, state-owned companies; and they will also be prepared to work in the nonprofit sector, such as NGOs and foundations.

Objectives and Target Audience

The course is targeted at highly qualified professionals of cultural heritage and social projects. Cultural heritage includes institutions, organizations and agencies that operate with the production, preservation and dissemination of cultural heritage considered in a broad sense. Over almost 20 years of existence, the professional master’s program has specialized in educating professionals of heritage, museology, cultural production, cultural communication, social and private company memory.

Social Projects includes institutions, agencies and organizations that plan, implement and evaluate social policies. The professional master’s program has trained professionals from diverse backgrounds, including those from social responsibility departments of public and private companies and NGOs conducting research and management of policies to combat inequality and poverty.

The professional doctoral program is designed to attract students with a profile similar to those of the professional master’s program, with a background in history, social sciences, communications, library sciences, museology, archival studies, information science, and others wishing to improve their theoretical knowledge to enhance their professional practice.
 

INTERDISCIPLINARY RECRUITMENT

To attract candidates with backgrounds in history, social sciences, communications, library sciences, museology, archival studies, information science, among others who wish to enhance their professional practice with deep theoretical knowledge.

THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL UPDATING

To offer professionals theoretical and methodological tools to meet new challenges, implement innovative projects, and improve their professional practices, updating them in relation to the epistemological and methodological debates that characterize the fields of history and the social sciences.

DISTINGUISHED QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify and equip students with the relevant theoretical and methodological knowledge and tools to work with private sector institutions, such as companies and consulting agencies; with the public sector, in government agencies and departments, cultural heritage institutions, state enterprises; and with the nonprofit sector, in NGOs and foundations.

To offer solid training for professionals to enter or consolidate themselves in the job market in the areas of archives, memory institutions, and social impact projects, not only in fields related to culture, but also in administration, tourism, teaching, communications, and sports, whether in private companies, public agencies, or NGOs and foundations.

Social projects are understood as the field formed by institutions, agencies and organizations that plan, implement, and evaluate social policies. FGV CPDOC has trained professionals from diverse backgrounds, coming from the social responsibility sector of public and private companies or NGOs with a tradition of research and management of policies to combat inequality and poverty.

Committees formed by PPHPBC

The entire faculty collaborate with the day-to-day administration of PPHPBC. Committees are constituted throughout the four-year period. The adoption of a rotation system ensures the participation and dedication of all faculty members in decisions such as selection for awards, admissions and other selection processes, preparation of manuals, distribution of scholarships, preparation of projects to compete for competitive public grants, among others.
