Call for papers

The Fundação Getulio Vargas School of Social Sciences (CPDOC/FGV), the History Department of PUC-Rio and the Multidisciplinary Institute/UFRRJ are pleased to invite contributions to the International Conference, “Worlds of Labor and Dictatorships in the Latin American Southern Cone.” The event will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on October 14-16, 2015. It will bring together an interdisciplinary audience to examine the multiple and varied experiences of workers during the authoritarian period in the Latin American Southern Cone (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay) in the second half of twentieth century.

The conference will not only explore the processes of political resistance and the mechanisms of control, surveillance, persecution and violence towards workers, but will also examine the ways in which authoritarian regimes created consensus and encouraged the integration of workers into the regime.

It will also analyze the social, economic and cultural transformations of those years and their impact on the everyday life of the working class. It invites participants, in transnational and comparative perspectives, to focus their attention on the connections, interactions and shared processes within the region and beyond.

The conference program will include three round tables with invited speakers: 1- Workers and the Historiography of Latin American Dictatorships; 2- Resistance, Consensus and Collaboration: Workers and Dictatorships; and 3- Companies, Employers and the Worlds of Labor during the Dictatorships) and 8 academic panels, with 4 presentations and 1 commentator each.
